In Memoriam: Marta Janczyk

 June 22, 1924 - January 04, 2023

Marta Janczyk, beloved wife of departed Petro Janczyk, is survived by her children Taras & Christina and their spouses Natalka and Stefan.

Marta Janczyk (née: Kowalchuk) was born on June 22, 1924 in the village of Krymno, Volyns`ka Oblast`, Ukraine. Marta’s father passed away when she was very young, leaving her with her mother, her sister and three brothers. As a child Marta endured and survived the Holodomor of 1932 at the young age of 8 before going on to complete Grade 8 of elementary school. When World War II broke out, Marta endured the struggles of the time, taken from her home at the age of 15 and sent to Germany to work on fabrics where she was kept working until 1945. When the war ended she was sent to the Polish DP (displaced person) camp, as there were no Ukrainian camps in the area, and she met her beloved husband Petro Janczyk there. Shortly after in 1946 they were married and within 2 years they relocated to England in 1948. After living and working in England nearly a decade they immigrated to Canada in 1958 arriving in Halifax then eventually settling in Saskatchewan where Petro built a home by a lake in Fort Qu’Apelle. They resided there for two years before making their final move to Toronto in 1960 where they lived the remainder of their lives.

In 1961, their son Taras was born in Toronto followed shortly thereafter in 1964 by the birth of their daughter Christina. Marta and her husband both worked at Toronto Western Hospital as orderlies helping patients until they both retired.

During her life, Marta was very active in the Ukrainian community as a member of various Women’s organizations as well as their church, St Volodymyrs’ Orthodox Cathedral. Her happiness in life was her children and belonging to the church and community. Marta was a kind and caring soul, devoted to her family and the Ukrainian community, always willing to help, and a devout follower of Jesus Christ and our Lord Father in the Orthodox Faith.

In March of 2017, Marta left her home of 57 years and moved to Ivan Franko Retirement home and eventually to their long term care home where she enjoyed attending the reading program, playing bingo and socializing with the other residents as well as reading Ukrainian literature and her beloved bible.

May she rest in peace and her soul be re-united with her departed husband Petro in heaven.

May she live forever in our hearts.

Vichna Pamiat. May her memory be eternal! Нехай з Богом спочиває!
