EVENT: Film Screening & Panel Discussion

Thu. Nov. 7/2024 | 506 Bloor St W, Toronto

I have the honour of inviting you to the Film Screening & Panel Discussion:

Curating the Truth: Documentary Film in the Age of Misinformation
 Date: Thursday, November, 7, 2024
 Time: 07.00 pm
Venue: Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema (506 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M5S 1Y3)

Documentary film is a powerful medium for storytelling, capable of shaping public perception—but it can also be used to spread disinformation, which is dangerous and destructive to democracy. Disinformation can distort public understanding, manipulate media narratives, and weaken the very foundations of democratic societies. Addressing this issue is a critical priority as we navigate the global information landscape.

This raises a crucial question in our Arts & Culture sector: should there be a policy on responsibility and ethical values in curating film festivals, particularly in the context of world conflicts? What could that look like in the future?

Through the screening of Zinema, a feature-length documentary by Kornii Hrytsyuk which investigates propaganda, xenophobia and chauvinism in Russian cinema from the 1990s to today, and a panel discussion featuring:
     - Chris Alexander, Former Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan
     - Angela Murphy, Foreign News Editor, The Globe and Mail
     - Tim Mak, Founder of The Counteroffensive
     - Myrocia Watamaniuk, Former Senior International Programmer, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto, as a moderator

We aim to examine how disinformation can infiltrate film narratives, the broader role of film festivals in upholding ethical standards, and explore actionable strategies to counter disinformation’s harmful effects on democracy and global media.
