New “Heroes Icon” of the Pokrova

Some of you may have noticed a new (and different) icon about the parish in the last few weeks. Our parish received this work from Ukraine in February, and another copy was also delivered to the Cathedral in Winnipeg. What is so different about these “icons” is that they are written on ammunition boxes brought back from the frontlines since the invasion of Russia began.

This one, and many others, are being written by iconographer, Oleksandr Klymenko of Kyiv, Ukraine. This particular icon is of the feast day of Pokrova (Покрова) - the Protection of the Theotokos (Oct. 14), except in this image she is depicted protecting with her omophor (veil) the service men and women, hence “Heroes Icon.”

The Pokrova icon we have received has been blessed (March 5, 2023) and will be mounted in the hall in place of the Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper.
