Alexander Ilchenko - New Associate Justice of the Superior Court of Ontario
Mnohaya Lita to a member of St. Volodymyr Cathedral in Toronto, Alexander Ilchenko, Associate Justice of the Superior Court of Justice
On the invitation of the Honourable Stephen E. Firestone, Regional Senior Justice, on November 3, 2022, there was an official Swearing-In Ceremony of three Associate Judges to the Superior Court Justice, one of whom is our member of St. Volodymyr Cathedral in Toronto, Alexander Ilchenko. The Swearing-In Ceremony took place at the Toronto Court Justice in the presence of invited Justices, Lawyers, close families, and guests.
After the initial official remarks about the nominees made by the Superior Court of Justice, the three candidates were presented to the Court by either family members or close friends. In the introductory remarks it was mentioned that Alexander Ilchenko is the son of the late Alexander and Olga Ilchenko, Holodomor Survivors, who immigrated to Canada. After the biographical note, a professional profile of Alexander was read:
“The Honourable Alexander Ilchenko was called to the Ontario bar in 1993. He is a certified specialist in bankruptcy and insolvency law and holds a bachelor of law degree from the University of Ottawa. He was a senior counsel and practice group head for insolvency and restructuring at Pallett Valo LLP since 2012. Prior to this, he was counsel for McMillan LLP for four years, an associate at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP for 10 years and at Lang Michener LLP for seven years. He served on the Ontario Bar Association Insolvency Law Executive for 16 years and is the past chair of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Litigation Practice Group at The Advocates’ Society.
He has been involved in various Ukrainian community organizations in leadership roles, including the National Vice President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and President (and a founding member) of the Ukrainian Canadian Bar Association. He has been the Honorary Solicitor of the Last Post Fund since 2015, a non-profit organization providing funeral benefits to over 150,000 Canadian and Allied veterans.”
It was a proud moment hearing Alexander’s profile where his Ukrainian identity was a dominant component of his biography. His profile ended with a Ukrainian congratulation and a Mnohaya Lita. His appointment to the Superior Court is a living testimony of the greatness of the Ukrainian nation especially in Canada, where one of her sons became an Associate Justice for the Superior Court in the Toronto region.
