Biography

Taras Slavchenko was born on March 8, 1918 in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region in Ukraine. After graduating from school and the Pedagogical College, he entered the language and literature faculty of the Scientific Pedagogical Institute. Having successfully completed it in 1938, he served as a teacher in a secondary school.

During the war, T. Slavchenko was taken to forced labour in Germany, where he worked until its surrender in 1945. In the same year, he moved to Munich, where he worked as Archbishop Michael's secretary and studied theology at the Theological Academy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church (UAC). In 1948, he left for Canada.

This academy was famous at that time for its highly qualified selection of professors and lecturers, and attracted not only candidates for future priests, but also those who sought to obtain a higher academic education. As a philologist with pedagogical practice, Taras Slavchenko was respected by both students and professors. He devoted much time to the editing of contemporary church publications, and language consultations.

After moving to Canada, he worked in Quebec for one year, and later moved to Toronto. In 1949, he married Olena Voitenko, in St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, Toronto, whom he had met in Germany after the war. They welcomed their first son Yurij (George) in 1951. In 1956, with the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion, Father Taras Slavchenko was ordained to the rank of deacon and priest by His Eminence Archbishop Michael, and was appointed to the parish in Dauphin, Manitoba, where a new, large and beautiful church was built under his leadership. Here too, sons Paul and Peter were born.

In 1960-64, Father Taras was assigned to Sudbury, Ontario. Following that posting, he served the following parishes: Ituna, SK, Wakaw, SK., Saskatoon, SK. (All Saints parish), Oshawa, ON. (St. John's Parish), Windsor, ON., and lastly, in St. Catherines, ON.

As part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada, Fr. Taras Slavchenko worked as a pastor and, later, manager of mission radio programs of the Church. For several years, he successfully created and broadcasted Ukrainian Voice of Orthodoxy for the central (Winnipeg) and western eparchies (Westlock), and Blahovisnyk for the eastern eparchy (Toronto). He chaired the boards of Mission Districts several times. As a priest, he always tried to perform his duties faithfully and solidly, for the glory of God and for the good of the Holy Church and the people, for which he was awarded various priestly awards, including the rank of Very Reverend and epigonate.

In Canada, as an experienced philologist, he had the opportunity to obtain a position at a university department of Slavic studies, but it was not to be. It seems that in his person a philologist and a religious thinker competed with each other, and the former yielded to the latter. He served faithfully for 29 years as a hard-working priest and teacher in the parish communities of eastern and western Canada, where he was sent by the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In each community, he oversaw the successful development of Ukrainian schools (language, literature, history and geography) and Sunday (religious) schools.

Very Reverend Father Taras Slavchenko advocated and preached the absolute combination of faith, truth and love in one unified understanding and conception of God. With special concern, he approached the problems of Ukrainian youth and tried to do everything possible to protect young souls from the negative influences of ever-changing and whimsical times, in which the foundations of human dignity are undermined and destroyed, and morality and Christian ethics are so often denied by current daily practice, leading to a terrible process of dehumanization of mankind. Truthfully, Very Rev. Father T. Slavchenko fought against the evil and negative influences of the street, mobilizing all possible means for those struggles, using his personal experience as a priest, teacher and father.

"Among the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada, Fr. Taras was one of the more active priests and for his work was awarded Very Reverend and epigonate. He fell asleep in the Lord on February 18, 1985, while parish priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox community in St. Catharines, Ontario. His mortal remains are buried in the St. Volodymyr Cemetery in Oakville, west of Toronto.

Slavchenko, "I believe...” : Orthodox Christian Studies, according to the symbol of Faith (75 Conversations-Sermons) is quite a contribution to the treasury of our spiritual literature. With the blessing of Metropolitan Vasiliy, the book by Very Rev. Father Taras Slavchenko of blessed memory was approved for printing and pious use.

For several years, V. Rev. Father Taras Slavchenko worked tirelessly on the texts of sermons about the Orthodox faith and the Church, on recordings of speeches and essays, and instructed his wife and sons to publish this creative legacy. Mrs. Dobrodijka Olena Slavchenko of blessed memory, passed away in 2010. The eldest son Yurij (George) took responsibility for fulfilling his father's will. It goes without saying that the publication of the mentioned works of the late V. Rev. Fr. Taras Slavchenko is dependent on finances. Біографія

Тарас Славченко народився 8-го березня 1918 року в Нікополі, на Дніпропетровщині в Україні. Після закінчення школи й Педагогічного технікуму, вступив на мовно-літературний факультет Наукового Педагогічного Інституту. Успішно закінчивши його в 1938 p., став на службу вчителя в середній школі.

В час війни Т. Славченко був вивезений на примусові роботи в Німеччину, де працював до капітуляції 1945 року. Того ж року він переселився до Мюнхену, де працював секретарем Архиєпископа Михаїла й студіював богословіє в Богословській Академії УАПЦ. 1948 року він виїхав у Канаду.

Ця академія славилася в той час своїм високо кваліфікованим підбором професорів та викладачів-лекторів, та приваблювала не тільки кандидатів на майбутніх священників, але також і тих, які прагнули здобути вищу академічну освіту. Як філолог з педагогічною практикою, Тарас Славченко був шанований як студентами, так і професорами. Багато часу він присвятив редагуванню тогочасних церковних публікацій та в мовних консультаціях.

Переїхавши до Канади, один рік працював в Квебеку, а пізніше переїхав до Торонто. В 1949 році одружився з Оленою Войтенко, в катедрі Св. Володимира, Торонто, з якою був познайомився в Німеччині після війни. Були обдаровані їхнім першим сином Юрієм у 1951 році. В 1956 році з благословення Митрополита Іларіона, Т. Славченко був висвячений в сан диякона і священника Високопреосвященнішим Архиєпископом Михаїлом, і був призначений на парафію в м. Давфин, Манітоба, де за його настоятельства побудовано нову, велику, гарну церкву. Тут також, родина помножилася: народилися сини Павло і Петро.

В 1960-64 р. був призначений до Судбурі, Онтаріо. Після цього обслуговував парафії: Айтуну, Саскачеван, Вакав, Саск., Саскатун, Саск. (громаду Всіх Святих), Ошава, Онт. (громаду Св. Івана), Виндзор, Онт. і останньо в Ст. Катеринс, Онт.

В складі Української Православної Церкви в Канаді о. Тарас Славченко працював як душпастир, а згодом -- управитель місійних радіо-програм У.Г.П.Ц.К. Кілька років успішно укладав і передавав «Український Голос Православія» для середньої (Вінніпег) і західної єпархій (Вестлок), і «Благовісник» для східної єпархії (Торонто). Кількаразово очолював управи Місійних округ. Як священник завжди старався свої обов'язки виконувати віддано і солідно, на славу Божу і для добра Святої Церкви і народу, за що був нагороджений різними священничими нагородами, включно з саном протоієрейства і епіґонатом.

В Канаді, як досвідчений філолог, він мав можливість влаштуватись викладачем на одному з відділів славістичних студій, але так не сталося. Виглядає, що в його особі змагалися між собою філолог і релігійний мислитель, та перший поступився другому. Він вірно служив, 29 років, як трудолюбивий священник і педагог у парафіяльних громадах східної і західної Канади, куди його посилав Провід УГП Церкви. У кожній громаді, піклувався успішним розвитком українських (рідних) і недільних (релігійних) шкіл.

Прот. Тарас Славченко обстоював і проповідував абсолютне поєднання віри, правди й любові в одне поняття Божої ідеї. З особливою турботою він підходив до проблем української молоді й старався зробити все можливе, аби захистити молоді душі від негативних впливів химерної доби, в якій нівечаться основи людської гідности і так часто мораль і християнська етика заперечуються поточною щоденною практикою, що веде до жахливого процесу обезлюднювання людини. Власне, прот. Т. Славченко змагався проти злих і негативних впливів вулиці, мобілізуючи для тих змагань усі можливі засоби, використовуючи при тому свій особистий досвід як священника, педагога і батька.

«Серед духовенства Української Православної Церкви в Канаді о. Тарас був одним з активніших священиків і за свою працю був нагороджений протоієрейством і епіґонатом. Він упокоївся в Бозі 18 лютого 1985 року, будучи настоятелем православної громади в Ст. Катеринс, Онтаріо. Його тлінні останки поховані на цвинтарі… [Святого Володимира в Оквіл], в районі Торонто.

Збірка бесід і місійних викладів прот. Т. Славченка, "Вірую...," Православно-Християнська Наука, згідно з символом Віри (75 Розмов-Проповідей)— це не абиякий вклад у скарбницю нашої духовної літератури. Вона витримала перегляд бл. п. о. д-ра Сергія Ґеруса й о. Професора Олега Кравченка.» (295 сторінка, Видавнича Спілка “Екклезія”, Вінніпег, 1992.)

З благословенням бл. п. Митрополита Василія, книжка бл. п. о. прот. Тараса Славченка була ухвалена до друку і побожного користування.

Прот. Тарас Славченко протягом декількох років невтомно працював над текстами проповідей про православну віру і Церкву, над записами промов і есеями та припоручив дружині і синам видати друком цю творчу спадщину. Бл. п. Добродійка Олена Славченко упокоїлася 2010. Старший син Юрій взяв на себе відповідальність за виконання волі свого батька. Самозрозуміло, що публікація згаданих праць покійного о.
