This year the Chapel’s Khramove Svyato is on July 7 and the Cathedral’s Khramove Svyato is the following weekend, July 14. That’s never happened before! What happened? Excellent question!

St. Volodymyr’s Day

Up until this year, we had never faced a situation like this because the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada had been on the Old Calendar where the feast day of St. Volodymyr the Great was July 28. But now that we are on the revised Julian calendar, the new feast day is July 15.

All Saints of Ukraine Day

Unlike the feast days of most saints (most have their own specific and fixed dates), the feast day of All Saints of Ukraine is NOT fixed. It actually depends on the Paschal date (which varies year to year and is independent of the revised Julian calendar) - it is always the second Sunday after Pentecost, which is to say 50 days (pentecost - Greek for “50”) plus 14 days. So when Pascha is early, the Chapel’s Khramove Svyato will be early but if Pascha is late then the Khramove Svyato will also be late. Hence this year’s proximity to the Cathedral’s Khramove Svyato.

Join Us This Year!

Join us this year for our double Khramove Svyata because while we are one parish we still have two distinct temples each with their own patron saints that ought be commemorated. In other words, do we actually want to question another “excuse” for us to come together and celebrate?!
