Saint Paul the Apostle to Hebrews 6:13-20

Heb 6:13

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, He swore by Himself,

Heb 6:14

saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you."

Heb 6:15

And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

Heb 6:16

For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.

Heb 6:17

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose, He guaranteed it with an oath,

Heb 6:18

so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

Heb 6:19

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain,

Heb 6:20

where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a High Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Eph 5:8

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light

Eph 5:9

(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

Eph 5:10

and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them

Eph 5:12

For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.

Eph 5:13

But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,

Eph 5:14

for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

Eph 5:15

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,

Eph 5:16

making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Eph 5:17

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

Євр 6:13

Бо Бог, обітницю давши Авраамові, як не міг ніким вищим поклястися, поклявся Сам Собою,

говорячи: Поблагословити Я конче тебе поблагословлю, та розмножити розмножу тебе!

Євр 6:15

І, терплячи довго отак, Авраам одержав обітницю.

Бо люди клянуться вищим, і клятва на ствердження кінчає всяку їхню суперечку.

Євр 6:17

Тому й Бог, хотівши переважно показати спадкоємцям обітниці незмінність волі Своєї, учинив те при помочі клятви,

Еф 5:8

бо плід світла знаходиться в кожній добрості, і праведності, і правді.

Допевняйтеся, що приємне для Господа,

Еф 5:11

і не беріть участи в неплідних ділах темряви, а краще й докоряйте.

Бо соромно навіть казати про те, що роблять вони потаємно!

Еф 5:13

Усе ж те, що світлом докоряється, стає явне, бо все, що явне стає, то світло.

Через це то й говорить: Сплячий, вставай, і воскресни із мертвих, і Христос освітлить тебе!

Отож, уважайте, щоб поводитися обережно, не як немудрі, але як мудрі,

використовуючи час, дні бо лукаві!

Еф 5:17

Через це не будьте нерозумні, але розумійте, що є воля Господня.

І не впивайтесь вином, в якому розпуста, але краще наповнюйтесь Духом,

A reading of Holy Scripture from The Gospel of Saint Mark the Apostle 9:17-31

Mar 9:17

And someone from the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought my son to You, for he has a spirit that makes him mute.

Mar 9:18

And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked Your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able."

Mar 9:19

And He answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to Me."

Mar 9:20

And they brought the boy to Him. And when the spirit saw Him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

Mar 9:21

And Jesus asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood."

Mar 9:22

And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us."

Mar 9:23

And Jesus said to him, "If You can! All things are possible for one who believes."

Mar 9:24

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!"

Mar 9:25

And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."

Mar 9:26

And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, "He is dead."

But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

Mar 9:28

And when He had entered the house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?"

Mar 9:29

And He said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer."

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And He did not want anyone to know,

for He was teaching His disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And when He is killed, after three days He will rise."

And great crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

And He opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Mat 5:12

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Venerable Saint John of the Ladder/Climax

--On the fourth Sunday of Lent, the Church commemorates St. John of the Climax (6th century), who is the writer of the book called The Ladder [Climax] of Paradise. This book contains 30 chapters, with each chapter as a step leading up to a faithful and pious life as the climax of Christian life. The spirit of repentance and devotion to Christ dominates the essence of this book, along with the monastic virtues and vices.

He was an ascetic and writer on the spiritual life as a monk-abbot of Sinai Monastery. These steps of the ladder, as set forth by St. John, are to be practised by the Christian, especially during this period of Great Lent. Each step leading to the top of the ladder is the climactic essence of the true meaning of a Christian life.

Одповідаючи йому, [Ісус] сказав: о роде невірний! Доки буду з вами? Доки буду терпіти вас? Приведіть його до Мене.

Мк 9:20

І привели його до Нього. І як тільки [біснуватий] уздрів Його, зараз дух стряс його, і він упав на землю і валявсь, пускаючи піну.

Мк 9:21

І запитав [Ісус] батька його: як давно це сталось йому?

Мк 9:22

Той сказав із дитинства. І часто кидає його в огонь і в воду, щоб згубити його; але, як що можеш, змилуйся над нами і поможи нам.

А Ісус сказав йому: коли що можеш вірувати, усе можна тому, хто вірує.

Мк 9:24

І зараз батько хлоп’яти, заголосивши, сказав крізь сльози: вірую, Господи! Поможи моєму недовірству!

Мк 9:25

Ісус, бачивши, що збігається народ, заборонив духові нечистому, кажучи йому: духу німий і глухий! Я тобі велю, вийди з нього та більше не входь у нього.

Мк 9:26

І закричав й вельми потряс його та й вийшов, і він зробивсь як мертвий, так що багато [з народа] говорили, що він умер.

Ісус же, узявши його за руку, підняв його, і він встав.

А як увійшов [Ісус] у дім, то ученики Його питали Його на самоті: чому не змогли ми його вигнати?

І сказав їм: цей рід нічим не можна вигнати, як тільки молитвою та постом.

І вийшовши звідти, проходили через Галилею, і Він не хотів, щоб хто знав.

Бо вчив учеників Своїх і говорив їм, що Син Людський виданий буде у руки людські, і вб’ють Його, і вбитий Він на третій день воскресне.

Одного разу за Ісусом йшло багато народу з Галилеї і Десятиграддя, і з Єрусалиму й Юдеї, і з того боку Йордану.

Побачивши народ, Ісус зійшов на гору, і як сів, то підійшли до Нього ученики Його.

І Він, одкривши уста Свої, учив їх, промовляючи:

Блаженні убогії духом, бо їх є Царство Небесне.

Мт 5:4

Блаженні плачущії, бо вони втішаться.

Блаженні тихії, бо вони осягнуть землю.

Блаженні голодні й жадні на правду, бо вони наситяться.

Блаженні милостивії, бо вони помилувані будуть.

Преподобний святий Іван Ліствичник

--У четверту неділю Великого Посту Церква постановила здійснювати пам' ять преподобного Іоана Ліствичника. Він народився приблизно 570 poку, і в віці 16 років прийшов до монастиря на горі Сінай, де присвятив своє життя чернечому подвигу. Після 19 років життя в обителі і сорокалітнього пустинножительства він був обраний ігуменом монастиря.

Господь наділив його благодатними дарами прозорливості і чудотворення. Головним па-м'ятником його життя є Ліствиця--шлях для сходження до духовної досконалості. Вона складається з тридцяти глав, кожна з яких присвячена одній з гріховних пристрастей чи християнських чеснот, і виявляє, як борючись із гріхами і накопичуючи одну чесноту за іншою, подвижник помножує свої духовні сили і начебто піднімається до духовного неба-стяжання благодаті БожоЇ.
