“Green” Before It Was Cool

Not many people are aware of this but we, as the Church, have been environmentalists before it was even a thing with David Suzuki and Al Gore. It is part of our DNA; humans were created by God to be stewards of the earth.

The Green Patriarch

In fact, His All Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople has even written two books about our role as Christians in protecting the earth and its environment (Toward an Ecology of Transfiguration: Orthodox Christian Perspectives on Environment, Nature, and Creation and On Earth as in Heaven: Ecological Vision and Initiatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, has been giving annual addresses (known as “encyclicals”) on September 1 (14th old calendar) since 1989 about ecology, and numerous talks including a TEDx talk and an interview with 60 Minutes. He is now known as the “Green Patriarch.”

Concern For The Environment Is Not Political

While the environment has become a divisive topic among many citizens around the world, being seen by some as a tool of control and manipulation, as Christians we must remember to look beyond the arguments that politicians and public figures present. It is our duty as humans to look after the environment our heavenly Father has given us. In other words, to be “господарі.
