Epistle reading from The First Epistle [letter] of Saint Paul the Apostle to Corinthians 6:12-20

1Co 6:12

"All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything.

1Co 6:13

"Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"--and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

1Co 6:14

And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.

1Co 6:15

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!

1Co 6:16

Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two will become one flesh."

1Co 6:17

But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.

1Co 6:18

Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1Co 6:19

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, Whom you have from God? You are not your own,

1Co 6:20

for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Prodigal -- a recklessly wasteful person who has repented and returned from wandering.

1Кор 6:12

Усе мені можна, та не все на пожиток. Усе мені можна, але мною ніщо володіти не повинно.

1Кор 6:13

Їжа для черева, і черево для їжі, але Бог одне й друге понищить. А тіло не для розпусти, але для Господа, і Господь для тіла.

1Кор 6:14

Бог же й Господа воскресив, воскресить Він і нас Своєю силою!

1Кор 6:15

Хіба ви не знаєте, що ваші тіла то члени Христові? Отож, узявши члени Христові, зроблю їх членами розпусниці? Зовсім ні!

1Кор 6:16

Хіба ви не знаєте, що той, хто злучується з розпусницею, стає одним тілом із нею? Бо каже: Обидва ви будете тілом одним.

1Кор 6:17

А хто з Господом злучується, стає одним духом із Ним.

1Кор 6:18

Утікайте від розпусти. Усякий бо гріх, що його чинить людина, є поза тілом. А хто чинить розпусту, той грішить проти власного тіла.

1Кор 6:19

Хіба ви не знаєте, що ваше тіло то храм Духа Святого, що живе Він у вас, якого від Бога ви маєте, і ви не свої?

1Кор 6:20

Бо дорого куплені ви. Отож прославляйте Бога в тілі своєму та в дусі своєму, що Божі вони!

A reading of Holy Scripture from The Gospel of Saint Luke the Apostle 15:11-32

Luk 15:11

And He said, "There was a man who had two sons.

Luk 15:12

And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them.

Luk 15:13

Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

Luk 15:14

And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.

Luk 15:15

So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

Luk 15:16

And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

Luk 15:17

"But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger!

Luk 15:18

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.

Luk 15:19

I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants."'

Luk 15:20

And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

Luk 15:21

And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

Luk 15:22

But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.

Luk 15:23

And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.

Luk 15:24

For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to celebrate.

Luk 15:25

"Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

Luk 15:26

And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.

Luk 15:27

And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.'

Luk 15:28

But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,

Luk 15:29

but he answered his father, 'Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.

Luk 15:30

But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!'

Luk 15:31

And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

Luk 15:32

It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

On the Sunday of the Prodigal Son, at Matins, we sing Psalm 137, from the The Book of Psalms, in which we see the constancy of the Jews in captivity in Babylon.

Psalm 137

Psa 137:1

By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion.

Psa 137:2

On the willows there we hung up our lyres.

Psa 137:3

For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"

Psa 137:4

How shall we sing the LORD's song in a foreign land?

Psa 137:5

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill!

Psa 137:6

Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy!

Psa 137:7

Remember, O LORD, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem, how they said, "Lay it bare, lay it bare, down to its foundations!"

Psa 137:8

O daughter of Babylon, doomed to be destroyed, blessed shall he be who repays you with what you have done to us!

Psa 137:9

Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!

Лк 15:11

Сказав Господь притчу цю: один чоловік мав двох синів.

Лк 15:12

І сказав молодший з них батькові: тату! Дай мені частину хазяйства, що припадає мені. І розділив їм пожитки.

Лк 15:13

Через небагато днів молодший син, зібравши все, одійшов у далекий край і там розтратив своє добро, живучи розпутно.

Лк 15:14

Коли ж він прожив усе, настав великий голод у тім краї, і він почав бідувати,

Лк 15:15

І пішов, пристав до одного хазяїна тієї країни, а той послав його на поля свої пасти свиней.

Лк 15:16

І він бажав наситити утробу свою ріжками, що їли свині, та ніхто не давав йому.

Лк 15:17

Схаменувшись же, сказав: скільки наймитів у батька мого вволю мають хліба, а я гину з голоду;

Лк 15:18

Встану, піду до батька мого і скажу йому: тату! Згрішив я проти неба і перед тобою,

Лк 15:19

І вже недостойний зватись твоїм сином; прийми мене як одного із наймитів твоїх.

Лк 15:20

І вставши, пішов до батька свого, і коли був він ще далеко, батько углядив його, і жаль йому стало, і побіг і кинувся йому на шию і поцілував його.

Лк 15:21

Сказав же йому син: тату! Згрішив я проти неба і перед тобою, і вже недостойний зватись твоїм сином.

Лк 15:22

А батько сказав до слуг своїх: принесіть найкращу одежу і одягніть його, і дайте перстень йому на руку і обув’я на ноги;

Лк 15:23

І приведіть годоване теля і заколіть: станьмо їсти і веселитись;

Лк 15:24

Бо син мій оцей був мертвий і ожив, згинув був і знайшовся. І почали веселитись.

Лк 15:25

А старший син його був тоді на полі, і вертаючись, як підійшов до дому, почув співи та радощі,

Лк 15:26

І покликавши одного з слуг, запитав: що це таке?

Лк 15:27

Той же сказав йому: брат твій прийшов, і твій батько заколов годоване теля, бо зустрів його здоровим.

Лк 15:28

Розсердився ж і не хотів увійти. Тоді батько його, вийшовши, кликав його.

Лк 15:29

Але він, озвавшись, сказав батькові: ось я стільки літ роблю тобі і ніколи приказу твого непереступив, і ти ніколи і козеняти не дав мені, щоб я повеселився з приятелями моїми;

Лк 15:30

А як син твій оцей, що проїв добро твоє з розпутницями, прийшов, то ти заколов йому теля годоване.

Лк 15:31

Він же сказав йому: сину, ти завжди зо мною, і все моє твоє;

Лк 15:32

Годилось же радуватись і веселитись, що брат твій оцей був мертвий і ожив, згинув був і знайшовся.

У Неділю про блудного сина, на Утрені, співається Псалом 137, з Книги Псалмів, в якій явна твердість Ізраїльтянів у полоні, у Вавилоні.

Псалом 137

Пс 137:1

Над річками Вавилонськими, там ми сиділи та й плакали, коли згадували про Сіона!

Пс 137:2

На вербах у ньому повісили ми свої арфи,

Пс 137:3

співу бо пісні від нас там жадали були поневолювачі наші, а веселощів наші мучителі: Заспівайте но нам із Сіонських пісень!

Пс 137:4

Як же зможемо ми заспівати Господнюю пісню в землі чужинця?

Пс 137:5

Якщо я забуду за тебе, о Єрусалиме, хай забуде за мене правиця моя!

Пс 137:6

Нехай мій язик до мого піднебіння прилипне, якщо я не буду тебе пам'ятати, якщо не поставлю я Єрусалима над радість найвищу свою!...

Пс 137:7

Пам'ятай же, о Господи, едомським синам про день Єрусалиму, як кричали вони: Руйнуйте, руйнуйте аж до підвалин його!...

Пс 137:8

Вавилонськая дочко, що маєш і ти ограбована бути, блажен, хто заплатить тобі за твій чин, що ти нам заподіяла!

Пс 137:9

Блажен, хто ухопить та порозбиває об скелю і твої немовлята!...
